The OSRA Research Grant will offer up to $50,000 to the most competitive and innovative proposals and is open to researchers from Qatar and all Arab countries. For researchers from other countries, it offers the opportunity to participate as collaborative partners with Qatari or Arab-based institutions. Awarded on a yearly basis, the grant offers researchers in the region a unique opportunity to conduct focused research on issues that impact the modern Arab family.

Aims of the Osra Grant:

  • To support innovative and high quality research initiatives that advance knowledge in the areas of family issues in support of the Institutes’ research agendas.
  • To provide policy-makers with evidence-based research and analysis that supports the design and implementation of new or more effective family related policies and programs.
  • To develop a network of research expertise in areas that supports DIFI’s research agenda.
  • To develop research capacity on issues related to the Arab family in Qatar and the Arab region.
  • To support QNRF’s mission to provide funding opportunities to advance the knowledge base in line with the Qatar National Research Strategy.

Themes of the OSRA Research Grantt

The OSRA Research Grant aims at advancing research that can be used to develop policies and programs to promote the well-being of the family. It focuses on:

  • Marriage in the Arab world– To generate research on the health and stability of marriage in the Arab world by analysing societal, cultural and other factors that shape contemporary marriages. To identify strategies, policies and programs that could increase marital quality and well-being.
  • Parenting in the Arab world– To provide an insight into parenting styles in Arab families and endeavour to understand the dynamics of the parent/child relationship. To highlight the development of evidence-based parenting policies and the programs that support parents raising children in contemporary Arab societies.
  • Family/work balance in the Arab world– To investigate the status of family/work balance in the Arab world by assessing the effectiveness and extent of existing national policies in support of working parents. To evaluate the impact and constraints of these policies in caring for the elderly or children, and the advancement of gender equity in Arab families and societies. Ultimately to present evidence for the development of national family policies that seek to reconcile work and family life and provide parents with support in the workplace, e.g. family friendly workplaces.
  • Family laws and practices in the Arab world– to review the impact of existing family laws and practices and assess if they meet the needs of contemporary societies, strengthen family stability and promote gender equity. The review should also evaluate the constraints and practices of family courts in Arab countries, and ultimately provide evidence for the reform of family laws and practices in Arab countries.
