Publications

The Doha International Institute for Family Studies & Development (DIIFSD) completed the editing process and finalized publication of three volumes of scholarship from the 2004 Doha International Conference for the Family. These three volumes* are a ground-breaking publication, the most comprehensive collection of international scholarship on the family ever published. Scholarship collected at the first round of Doha International Colloquia on the Family is now being edited for the Fourth Volume of the Family in the New Millennium.

Description

A remarkable team of contributors based across 19 countries explores and explains events worldwide affecting the natural family--married father and mother with biological children --detailing concepts and benefits of natural family that have been taken for granted across centuries, but are now being challenged in many ways. These scholars, many admittedly taking stands that may be deemed politically incorrect, conclude that the natural family is being threatened, yet is vital to provide common ground among all societies, cultures and religious traditions. Psychologists, sociologists, economists, theologians, lawyers, health care professionals, and award-winning journalists are among the chapter authors, as are Nobel Prize Laureate Gary Becker, U.S. Department of Health Assistant Secretary for Children and Families Wade Horn, and former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Bin Mohamad. Whether or not you agree with their arguments, science and conclusions, you'll want to know what these influential figures are saying.

Addressing many lightning-rod issues, from divorce and abortion to euthanasia and same-sex marriage, writers here span the world from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to Australia, Turkey, India, and China. Intellectuals included are associated with institutions from Brigham Young University, Georgetown School of Medicine and the Boston College School of Law, to the University of Geneva, and the Maxim Institute in New Zealand.

Documentaries

Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Consort of His Highness the Emir of Qatar, President of Qatar Foundation and Founder of The Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development, has repeatedly noted that healthy family life is a central component of sustainable personal, social and economic development. A series of three documentaries on family life produced by The Doha Institute explore the norms and practices that ensure well-functioning families and prosperous and peaceful societies.
The documentaries, derived from scores of interviews with families and scholars from 17 nations, reflect the challenges (and opportunities) of family life around the world. The families and experts interviewed for the documentaries speak in many languages and reflect diverse cultures, but demonstrate that there are widely shared values and practices that support meaningful and quality family life. The three documentaries are narrated (and subtitled) in both English and Arabic. Viewers are encouraged to reach their own conclusions and take action to improve their own family relationships.
Each program features families, scholars and government leaders from around the world who respond to a series of questions developed by family scholars over 20 years of academic and clinical research. Experts from Qatar, Malaysia, Brazil and the United States add insight a commentary regarding the real lives of real families. Each program concludes with simple but powerful concepts that lie at the heart of an effective, strong family-whatever the family's ethnicity or culture.

  • Can commitment to a greater cause help achieve positive outcomes?

Government and civic leaders comment on the importance of family to personal, social and economic development.
